DIY Halloween ideas

October 6, 2016

In this house, we like to make our own Halloween costumes!  I thought I would share a few of our favorites from over the years in case you were scrambling for some last minute ideas!

FLOWER

My little lady was a flower for her first Halloween. It was such an easy and cute costume!

What you need:
  • White onesie
  • Green felt
  • Fabric glue
  • Striped leggings
  • Green tutu. DIY Tutorial HERE
  • Headband
  • Oversized silk flower

I cut some green felt into a stem and a few leaves.  Then I glued the felt to a plain onesie.  Next I whipped up a simple tutu, which is soooo easy.  Finally I glued a large flower to a headband and voila!

WEREWOLF
My middle loved this costume a few years back! We had most of the supplies around the house, so it was super easy and cheap to put together.

What you need:
  • Flannel shirt
  • Old jeans (these already had holes in them)
  • Brown fur
  • Brown Halloween hairspray
  • Brown, white + black makeup
  • Fabric glue
First I cut a few more holes in the jeans and made a jagged edge at the bottom. Next I took pieces of the brown fur and glued and pinned it so it peeked through the holes. I also attached some to his undershirt and at his shirt cuffs. I bought the fur at Hobby Lobby.  They sell it in little patches like THIS. I sprayed his hair brown and then did my best with the face paint. I did a trial the week before, so I wasn't winging it the night of Halloween.

WALDO
This was actually a costume for book character day at school, but I think it could totally work for Halloween too!

What you need:
  • Long sleeve white tee
  • Jeans
  • Red fabric paint
  • Painters tape
  • Black glasses
  • Red + white beanie

If you can find a red + white striped shirt that's awesome. I wasn't able to find one, so I had to improvise. I bought a cheap white tee at Hobby Lobby and measured out thick stripes with painter's tape. I painted in between with the red fabric paint. Be sure to put some cardboard or something in the shirt first so the paint doesn't bleed through. It was a little messy, but the it turned out great. We found some cheap round glasses at the local Halloween store, and my mom made him a knit beanie. He was super cute and got lots of compliments!

OWL
One of my favorites was this adorable owl costume! My son was two here and was the cutest little owl EVER!

What you need:
  • Brown boas
  • Fabric in a bunch of colors
  • Fabric glue
  • Striped pants
  • Knit owl hat
  • Brown turtle neck

I started with a brown turtleneck and some fabric pieces cut into kind of rounded triangles. I glued them with fabric glue in an overlapping pattern. I attached the boas to his sleeves and a little strip around his neck. I purchased the owl hat from Etsy, and we had striped pj pants already. I picked the orange, teal, brown theme, but you could go with any colors!

BANK ROBBER
So fun and easy! My son really got into character with this one!

What you need:
  • Black striped tee
  • Black pants
  • Black beanie
  • Black felt
  • Green felt
  • Black elastic
  • Fabric glue
  • Small pillowcase
  • Fake money (optional)
  • Flashlight
  • Black face paint or mascara

We had the shirt, pants and beanie already, so we were off to a good start. I cut some black felt into a face mask shaped and attached it to some black elastic. I cut the green felt into a dollar sign shape and glued it to the pillowcase. This also served as his candy bag. I glued some play money to the edge of the bag, so it looked like it was overflowing. Finally I dotted his face with my mascara to give him a scruffy-looking beard/mustache!

Hope y'all have a HAPPY HALLOWEEN!  I cannot wait to see everyone's photos!!!!
